MAY 24 SUNDAY SERVICE

His purposes will ripen fast, unfolding every hour;

the bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flower.

William Cowper

prelude

We asked the high school and college graduates from our church to record a short video updating you on their next steps. Let's rejoice with them in their graduation, and pray for them as they transition to new things!

call to worship

Our world is full of gloom and deep darkness. But we come to worship the One who said,

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

Our world is full of fear and trouble. But we come to worship the One who said,

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Our world is full of grief and loss. But we come to worship the One who said,

I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.

confession of sin

Take turns reading this prayer of confession together.

Heavenly Father, we are isolated right now, and that isolation has made us weak against Satan's attacks. We have been more prone to believe his lies.

Some of us are ashamed to admit, like Job, that there have been days this past week where we wished we had never been born. Or that You would hurry and take us home.

Some of us feel, like Job, that thick darkness is around us and in our soul. Those clouds are covering Your light, and our way is hidden from us--we can't see a future that isn't dark.

Some of us feel hedged in by sorrow, or despair, or bitterness. We cry out to You, but we don't hear Your voice. We confess that we are but dust. We are frail before You. We are not strong enough, or good enough, or wise enough to bear the brokenness of this world.

We need You and so we come as Your people, as we do every week, with empty hands and hearts, asking that You would forgive us and make us whole.

Take a few moments to silently confess your sins.

the good news of forgiveness

Christ died for our sins, once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God. Friends, believe the good news of the gospel!

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

gospel partner glimpse

Our church partners with parents in the Fox Valley to equip and educate a generation of Christian disciples where every mind is grounded, every heart is connected, and every hand is serving for the glory of God, through Westminster Christian School. In this gospel partner glimpse, School Board President and Westminster member, Deb Hoon, gives us a snapshot of what ministry through the school has looked like over the past few months.

prayers for the church and world

Join Pastor O'Donnell and members of the congregation in praying for Steve and Susan Hall as Steve transitions to a new position in the south, for the high school and college graduates from our congregation, for Westminster Christian School, for Nick Holmer as he marries Lauren Kostelny this afternoon, and for the broader needs of our church and world right now. Click the audio file below to join them in prayer. Conclude your prayer with the Lord's Prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive our debts,

As we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and glory forever.

Amen.

words of sending

May we learn to be steadfast under trial, like Job, and even more like our suffering Savior, so that our trials might have their full effect and that we may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

song of celebration - postlude

A reminder that our church is participating in a 31 Day Challenge towards Community in an intentional effort to lean into our church family while we maintain social distance. We are praying that we emerge from this season more connected than ever before, only by the power and unity of the Spirit.

Children! Pastor O'Donnell loves seeing your sermon notes and the activities you complete as part of our Westminster Kids! Your parents can take a picture of what you complete and share it with him at dodonnell@wpchurch.com.

We have several virtual small groups to help us connect while we cannot be together. To learn more, email Emily O'Donnell at eodonnell@wpchurch.com.

It is a privilege to pray for each other as we face challenges and joys. To share a specific prayer request with the church leadership, email Pastor O'Donnell at dodonnell@wpchurch.com.
