easter sunday - april 12

The good news of the Gospel is resurrection. It is a reversal. Instead of Adam stammering from his hiding place and looking back at angels with flaming sword, we have a Son of God thundering out and angels announcing the miracle as they had in the skies above Bethlehem. This is a new day. (Zach Kincaid)

Prelude: Fanfare on Christ The Lord Is Risen Today

call to worship

As God calls us to worship, we shout aloud that Christ is Risen, He is Risen indeed! As you watch and listen to the households of the church repeat this phrase over and over again, let the glorious truth cause your heart to rejoice!

the apostles' creed

For centuries, the church has united around these core beliefs about God and the world. Let us confess them now with Christians all across the globe. Christian, what do you believe?

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

     Maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

     born of the Virgin Mary,

     suffered under Pontius Pilate,

     was crucified, dead and buried;

     He descended into hell.

On the third day He rose again from

the dead. He rose again! On the third

day He rose again from the dead!

     He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God

the Father almighty. From there He will

come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

     the holy catholic* church.

     the communion of saints,

     the forgiveness of sins,

     the resurrection of the body,

     and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn - Christ The Lord Is Risen Today

confession of sin

Take turns reading the prayer,

joining your voices for the bold portions.

Almighty God, You have raised Jesus from the dead and crowned Him Lord of all.

We confess that we have not bowed before Him or acknowledged His rule in our lives.

Father, You have given Jesus all authority in heaven and earth and we know He is coming again as a righteous Judge.

And yet, we have gone along with the ways of the world and failed to give Him glory.

Forgive us and raise us from sin, that we may be Your faithful people, obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ, who rules the world and is head of the church, His body.

Take some time to silently confess your sin to God.

assurance of pardon

As we have confessed our sin to God, let us together claim aloud the promise of forgiveness, based on Romans 8:9-11.

We are not in the flesh; we are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in us.

Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. But if Christ is in us, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in us, He who raised Christ from the dead will give life to our mortal bodies also through His Spirit that dwells in us. Amen.

prayers for our church and world

Click the audio file below to participate in the prayers of the people. Conclude your prayer with the Lord's Prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive our debts,

As we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and glory forever.

Sermon - The Resurrection and Repentance

response to sermon

Sing or say the response to the sermon:

Jesus my Redeemer,

Name above all names,

Precious Lamb of God, Messiah,

O for sinners slain.

Thank you, O my Father,

for giving us Your Son,

and leaving Your Spirit

'Til the work on earth is done.

sermon discussion questions

Sometime today, choose one or more of these questions to consider and discuss.

Why does it matter that Jesus rose from the dead?

According to Paul, what is the right response to Jesus' resurrection?

Is repentance from sin a daily practice for you? If it is, share how you practice it on a regular day. If it isn't (and it should be) what can you change to make it a more regular practice?

How does the reality that we are all God's offspring move and motivate you toward repentance? And how does the reality that Jesus is the appointed Judge move you to repentance?

What are some of the idols that you daily need to repent of worshiping? Take time to think! We all have them. How can you turn away from them today?

Hymn - the Power Of The Cross

words of sending

Take turns reading these words of sending.

As followers of Jesus Christ,

living in this world-

which some seek to control,

but which others view with despair-

we declare with joy and trust:

Our world belongs to God!

From the beginning,

through all the crises of our times,

until his kingdom fully comes,

God keeps covenant forever.

Our world belongs to him!

God is King! Let the earth be glad!

Christ is Victor; his rule has begun. Hallelujah!

The Spirit is at work, renewing creation. Praise the Lord!

We rejoice in the goodness of God,

renounce the works of darkness,

and dedicate ourselves to holy living.

As covenant partners,

called to faithful obedience,

and set free for joyful praise,

we offer our hearts and lives

to do God's work in his world.

With tempered impatience, eager to see injustice ended,

we expect the Day of the Lord.

And we are confident

that the light which shines in the present darkness

will fill the earth when Christ appears.

Come, Lord Jesus!

Our world belongs to you.

May the singing of this simple chorus be a blessed reminder that our good God is in control of our whole world.

He's got the whole world in His hands,

He's got the whole world in His hands,

He's got the whole world in His hands,

He's got the whole world in His hands.
