Sunday School
Him we proclaim, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. Colossians 1:28
While community and learning are two key aspects of our Christian Education at Westminster, our prayerful goal is for hearts and lives to be transformed by the Word of the Lord and the working of the Holy Spirit resulting in “fruit that abides”.
Adult Sunday School
No matter where you are in your Christian experience or spiritual journey, we invite you to try out one of our adult classes as we think, discuss, and contemplate God’s word and world together. Classes begin at 9 am.
For Winter 2012: The Book of Mark
Mark is one of the four Gospels, and one of three (along with Matthew and Luke) known as the Synoptic Gospels (because of their similarities). John writes about similar things, but his genre is different. The four Gospels have the same message or story line, but each has a unique approach. Matthew’s audience was Jewish, and he wrote about the kingdom. Luke wrote in parables and stories, and about the humanity of Jesus. John is more theological in his approach, and he wrote about Jesus as both God and man. Mark writes about the suffering servant, king.
Mark was a secretary/translator to Peter, and as we read through the book we see that almost nothing happens in which Peter is not present. It is written in the present tense, is full of action, and moves at a very rapid pace. Timothy Keller says that Mark is also broken up into two symmetrical acts: His identity as King over all things (Mark chapters 1-8),and His purpose in dying on the cross (Mark chapters 9-16). He adds that Mark wants us to see that the coming of Jesus calls for decisive action.
This should be a very informative as well as a soul strengthening study. We will use a few different sources to help us unpack and apply the the rich teaching in this great Gospel account.
Children’s Sunday School
The Children’s Sunday school department serves children age two through 5th grade and hosts classes every week during the school year from 9 am to10 am. Included each week is a time for all ages to gather together for the singing of hymns and praise songs.
Our goal is to delight in and care for children in developmentally appropriate ways, partnering with parents in their efforts to train their children well in the faith. Our desire is to help lay a strong spiritual foundation from which every child can develop his or her own personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Sunday Catechism Classes
Our purpose is to provide support and direction to parents of 5 to 10 year olds who are seeking to teach their children basic Christian theology using the Catechism for Young Children.
We meet after worship on designated Sundays for lunch, fellowship, music, and a reinforcing activity focusing on particular questions. All this rolled into a little more than an hour.
